From the visible to the invisible: symbols of power in Akan country (West Africa)

The regalia of the Akan people of Ghana,Togo and the Ivory Coast (the Ashanti, Anyi ,Baoulé and Gain ethnic groups, among others) can be divided into three categories: items that are directly in contact with the person of the king, those carried by dignitaries at his side, and the consecrated objects, guarantors of the legitimacy of the royal power and kept apart, notably the ancestral ‘black seats’ – blackened by the blood of sacrifice – that the king could not touch and to which he did not normally have access. Some of these material symbols of royal power crossed the borders of the territory over which this power was exercised, that is the visible world. They are to be found among the objects that indicate the power exercised in the invisible world by the komyen, ‘priestesses’ that perform mediation between human beings and the deities or genii, the bosson. Certain objects such as sabres and chairs borrow their forms from the regalia, differing only in the material (the sabre blades are not made of iron but wood) and the colour (they are all whitened with kaolin, especially the chairs). A single mode of representation of power appears to predominate.
